This information applies to expat children living in Thailand, regardless of whether they were born in Thailand or not.

Children under the age of 14 years do not get charged for overstaying and therefore do not usually require a visa. However the immigration department state that it does not "look good" for a child to have number of overstays stamped on their passport but as yet there is no clear indication as to what else parents are supposed to do. When you do leave Thailand you will be escorted to an overstay room where you should show a copy of your child's birth certificate (if they were born in Thailand) and wait while the overstay is stamped. Immigration recommend that you take your child and their passport with yours when you do the 90 day immigration check in. They also recommend that if  you are doing a visa run that you always take the child with you.

This problem is solved when the child starts school and at which time the can apply for an education or ED-visa.
